Solo Travel Day 3 - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia šŸ‡²šŸ‡¾

07/01/2024

What a day!!!! I am very proud of myself today blog hehe!! I did so much cool stuff all by myself! And felt good doing it too! Go me!! šŸ˜Ž I got up super early as I was definitely going up the Twin Towers today - can't miss that again! I thought they opened at 10am and I got there at 9:37am (to be precise) expecting to be early but I was late! Oops. Nothing in Kuala Lumpur opens that early! The next available time slot was 12:30pm so I jumped at the chance to book that but now I had a little under 3 hours to kill. After hanging around in the mall at the foot of the Towers (Suria KLCC) for a little while I decided to visit Aquaria KLCC, the aquarium just by the Towers. Because if there is one thing I'm gonna do, it's go look at some fish! Only I would set out for the morning with the intention of going up the Twin Towers, and end up at the aquarium. (In my defence I did also feel like going here would be a bit like a safe space as I knew I'd be happy and there'd be no room for any iffy feelings, even though I was feeling good!) Unsurprisingly, once inside I was very pleased with my choice! I got to see some really cool fish (some of my faves like pufferfish and the longhorn cowfish,) HUGE sharks with really sharp razor teeth, a cute leopard print stingray (me if I was an animal,) and then some creatures I don't think I've ever seen before like arapaima (very large weird shaped fish from South America) and oriental flying gurnard (a small fish that uses its pelvic fins to walk across the seafloor (very weird to watch.)) You'll have to google them if you're curious!! I also appreciated the section of the aquarium where they show you the work they've been doing in reef conservation; they've been working for a few years now to restore and protect coral populations around Malaysia. This is always good to see!! I had some food after the aquarium; a cheese tofu skewer (which I was undecided if I liked or not) and a rice bowl (which I definitely liked,) and headed for the Twin Towers.

Now for the main event!!! My bag and I both went through security airport style and made it into the waiting area to go up the Twin Towers! Finally! We first went up halfway to floor 41 to visit the Skybridge that connects both towers. The views were amazing and it felt extra cool to be walking between the towers and I was surprisingly not freaked out at all!! Especially as one of the guides had just told us that the bridge is not actually fully attached to the towers as this allows for small movements during crazy weather without it breaking!! And even showed us the scratch on the floor that the bridge made when it moved 7 inches during the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami šŸ˜¦ We only had 10 minutes on the bridge (more on that later) and then it was time for the main event of the main event!!! We took the lift to the very top, floor 86, and it was absolutely breathtaking!!! We were in the clouds!!!!! When we first stepped out of the lift it was impossible to actually see anything out of the windows because the clouds were in the way! I know this sounds annoying but trust me it was EPIC!! The clouds soon cleared and we had a stunning view of the whole of Kuala Lumpur! It really was amazing to be seeing the city from these heights and to be spotting all the other buildings and sights that I'd been visiting prior to this. There were also lots of cool interaction-type-things at the top; one of my favourites being a timelapse of '24 Hours in Kuala Lumpur,' which showed the city through every minute of every hour of the day with random snippets of Malaysian city life as well! It was very cool! Overall an amazing experience that I am SO glad I did! Now for the slight downside :( It did feel like a very short amount of time up the towers which was a little bit sad. Online it says you have 45 minutes but honestly, it was more like 25 minutes; 10 on the skybridge and 15 on the top floor. After the top floor you do come down a few levels but there's a shop and little coffee stalls and this doesn't feel as good as the other parts so it's not really worth being included in the time frame (in my opinion.) I would still highly recommend going up the towers because it was a brilliant experience, this is just something to be aware of! It was only around Ā£16.50 though which, I think, given it's the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur (the tallest twin towers in the world) and they are absolutely stunning, is a really really good price!!

After having a sick morning I wandered around the Suria KLCC mall a bit more (becoming an occurrence) whilst deciding what to do for the rest of the day (note to self: make a whole days plan tomorrow!) I was on a roll and I needed to keep it up! šŸ˜‚ I got a grab taxi from the mall across the city a little way to visit the National Museum of Malaysia (entry RM5/Ā£0.85.) The museum consists of 4 main areas depicting different periods throughout Malaysia's history (early history, the Malay kingdoms, the colonial era and Malaysia today) and I managed to get around it all in a little over an hour. I enjoyed learning about new aspects of Malaysia's rich past and present, like the old city of Melaka which was a popular international port and all the different ethnicities and cultures in the country, and also adding to events I already knew about (the independence of the nation and the formation of Malaysia.)

Once finished I ended up visiting another museum, except this one was very different! I met up with one of my friends who wanted to go to the Museum of Illusions Kuala Lumpur (this was a little pricier than the last museum at RM55/ Ā£9.50 and maybe not as good.) This illusions museum was quite small and what they had was cool but it just needed to be a bit bigger with more things to do to make it worth the money; most of their illusions I already knew about having been to Camera Obscura in Edinburgh a couple of times recently (this didn't help as I was comparing the two and Camera Obscura is hard to beat.) We were done at the Museum of Illusions in time to walk over to the River of Life to watch the night show. I wasn't really sure what I was expecting but after the Twin Towers night show I guess I was expecting something pretty impressive!! There were lights, music, fountains and fog across the river so it was definitely still a good show but just not anywhere near the level of the Twin Towers night show šŸ˜… My recommendation if you want to see both night shows is to go to the River of Life one first!! The final task of the day was to find some dinner! We went to a hot pot restaurant as it was one of the last places open around us and had some vegetable fried rice and a veggie hot pot with the cheese tofu again. Still not sure how I feel about this but I'm seeing it in a lot of places so I might have to decide to like it lol! The fried rice was really nice and that's all I'll say on that!! šŸ˜‚ Finally back in my pod feeling unsure of what to do tomorrow though as I am way too tired to get up early for a day trip to Melaka as planned. Oopsie. Come back for tomorrow's blog to see what I decide on šŸ¤Ŗ Byeeee!
